PYMNTS. Nvidia CEO predicts coming of General AI, but not everyone’s onboard

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang proposed that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, could become a reality within the next five years.

This assertion, made during an economic forum at Stanford University, has ignited discussions among experts regarding the potential implications of such advancements for human jobs and lifestyle.

Huang's viewpoint carries weight, as Nvidia is the leading global producer of AI-powering GPUs.

However, despite Huang's optimism, many experts in the field remain cautious about the near-term impact of AGI on society.

Central to the discourse is the characterization of AGI and the benchmarks used to measure its progress. Huang emphasized the timeline for achieving AGI hinges significantly on how the goal is defined. He suggested that if the ability to pass tests designed for humans is considered a benchmark, the emergence of AGI may indeed be on the horizon.

PYMNTS recently discussed this topic with Vaclav Vincalek, virtual CTO and founder of 555vCTO.

The term ‘AGI’ is still unclear

Despite Huang’s influential comments, there are many who believe the development of AGI will still take a while.

The definition of what constitutes AGI is still a hotly debated matter.

Right now, even the term “AGI” is unclear because there’s no precise definition of what constitutes intelligence, Vaclav Vincalek, founder of 555vCTO told PYMNTS in an interview.

“It has been the subject of millennia of debate in scientific and philosophical circles,” he added. “Since the ‘I’ is not clearly defined (or even understood), it is impossible to create a specification against which the technology people can build the system.”

Other experts skeptical of Huang’s timeline

Yann LeCun, Meta's chief scientist, has previously countered Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's assertions about the imminent arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

LeCun believes that current AI systems are far from achieving a level of sentience that encompasses common sense and predicts it will take decades to reach such a milestone.

He suggested society is more likely to develop AI with intelligence levels comparable to cats or dogs before achieving human-level AI.

The tech industry's focus solely on language models and text data is insufficient for creating the advanced AI systems envisioned by experts for years, he added.
