International Business Times. Microsoft has a long way to go to be ‘maestro’ of AI
Microsoft Corporation is supposedly spearheading a new era of AI transformation and in turn, revolutionizing the business world. The company’s Copilot and Copilot stack are billed as products designed to drive better business outcomes across all roles and industries.
Recently, International Business Times quoted Executive VP and Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff, who highlighted the strategic placement of Copilot on every desk, device, and role as central to Microsoft's AI mission.
IBT also spoke with virtual CTO and founder of 555vCTO.com Vaclav Vincalek to get his take on Microsoft’s AI standing in the industry.
Microsoft’s Copilot is still just an AI chatbot at best
AI’s popularity has grown exponentially since the release of ChatGPT. It spurred Microsoft to move quickly to create its own version of ChatGPT. There’s no question the company is a tech giant, but Vincalek cautions against giving any one tech giant the gold medal right now.
"Whether Microsoft becomes the 'maestro' of AI transformation depends on its ability to make good on these announcements. When its products start making a meaningful impact on businesses, then we can start describing it as the 'maestro.' For now, Copilot is still just a glorified chatbot," said Vaclav Vincalek, virtual CTO and founder of 555vCTO.com.
The reasons Microsoft and its Copilot are seen as the ‘maestro’ of AI
It seems Microsoft is getting a ‘maestro’ title due to the company’s recent financial results for Q1. As IBT reports, all of its business segments were up, including:
Revenue in Productivity and Business Processes, which stood at $19.6 billion and increased 12% (up 11% in constant currency).
Meanwhile, revenue in Intelligent Cloud was $26.7 billion and increased 21%, and revenue in More Personal Computing was $15.6 billion which was an increase of 17%.
Various experts in the article highlighted Microsoft’s strong performance. They touted Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI, Microsoft’s suite of AI products, and the company’s overall move to invest in AI research, development, innovation, and infrastructure.
Reasons why Microsoft shouldn’t get the ‘maestro’ of AI title just yet
However, Vincalek cautions against giving any tech giant a leg up on the other so early in the AI race.
“Once you see billions of dollars on the company income statement which could be directly attributed to its ‘AI Transformation’, only then can you start coming up with Italian labels. We are years away as of now,” says Vincalek.
He believes AI products need to have tangible, measurable results for their users before the companies making such products are given the prestige of being the AI company.
