CIO. 5 dead-end IT skills — and how to avoid becoming obsolete

As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, IT professionals need to focus on higher-level strategic thinking to stay relevant in their careers.

Speaking with CIO, Vincalek, the founder of 555vCTO, explains how certain network management processes will be automated, while emphasizing that IT professionals will always need to maintain a solid understanding and skillset in these areas.

Adapting to Digital Transformation

The IT industry is undergoing a major digital transformation, with executives working to align their tech strategies for 2025. A recent report from Deloitte highlights that adopting emerging technologies, like AI, advanced cybersecurity, and automation, is now a top priority for CIOs. For IT veterans, this means it's crucial to support their organizations in embracing these innovations to stay ahead and keep their careers on track.

However, as automation fills in the gaps left by skills shortages, IT careers are being reshaped. Some roles may become obsolete as machines take over tasks once done by humans. This is prompting IT professionals to rethink their skills and find new ways to adapt to ensure they don’t get left behind.

IT leaders are recognizing that many traditional roles, such as software development, network management, and application testing, need to evolve. At the same time, there’s a growing need for professionals who can guide AI-driven processes and ensure technology aligns with the business’s broader goals.

Automating Network Management for Improved Efficiency

Vaclav Vincalek, CTO and founder of 555vCTO, highlights Google’s use of software-defined networking (SDN) to connect its global data centers. He explains that SDN automates traffic routing, improving bandwidth and efficiency, instead of requiring manual management of each connection.

He told CIO, "Many tasks that once needed manual setup are now automated, simplifying IT operations," Vincalek adds, noting that tasks like maintaining network devices—such as routers, switches, and firewalls—are now automated as well.

However, while automation will be taking care of some aspects of network management, Vincalek makes the point that the knowledge behind those skills is still necessary.
